Amnesia is an umbrella term that encompasses many kinds of memory-loss. There are several different types of amnesia, including anterograde (having trouble remembering after experiencing head injury), retrograde amnesia (having trouble remembering events before a head injury), Korsakoff’s psychosis (brought on by alcohol abuse), traumatic amnesia, childhood amnesia (deficit in early memories), and hysterical amnesia (occurs psychological disturbance or PTSD). Depending on the type of amnesia, treatments include psychotherapy, cognitive rehabilitation, hypnosis and psychiatric treatment.
