Adenoids are enlarged masses of lymphatic tissue located at the back of the nose and upper throat. Also known as the pharyngeal tonsils, their role is to produce antibodies to trap infections. Adenoids are generally more present in younger children, and should degenerate between the ages of 5 and 7. If infected, adenoids swell and obstruct airflow, potentially causing recurrent ear infections. The treatment for enlarged adenoids include medication or, in severe cases, a surgery known as an adenoidectomy.
