Pre-eclampsia

Pre-eclampsia is the precursor to eclampsia and is a pregnancy condition characterized by high blood pressure, oedema (swelling), and kidney malfunction. It may also be known as toxemia. It may occur any time during the second half of the pregnancy but it is most common after 37 weeks have elapsed. Treatment options include delivering the baby where possible, bed rest, magnesium sulfate, hospitalization and medication. In conjunction with traditional medicine, nutritional therapy, herbal therapy, and acupuncture may also be used.
