Poisonous Plants
Poisonous plants that are common in Australia include asthma/stick weed, rhus, oleander, dieffenbachia, mushrooms and toadstools, angel’s trumpet, cycads, grevilleas, poinsettia, rhubarb leaves, white cedar, yesterday today tomorrow, agapanthus, azaleas, rhododendrons, many bulb plants (such as daffodils), and foxgloves. If you are in doubt about a plant, ask your local nursery or plant supplier for advice. Poisonous plants may just cause a mild allergic reaction or they can be fatal. Symptoms of plant poisoning include vomiting, stomach cramps, irregular heartbeat, burning to the mouth, convulsions, and skin allergies. Treatment includes calling an ambulance/going to hospital, washing the eyes or skin with water, and removing any plant material from the mouth or body.
