Peritonitis is the inflammation of the peritoneum, which is the lining of the abdominal cavity. It often results from a perforation and may be caused by infection, injury, or certain diseases. Symptoms of peritonitis include severe abdominal pain, a rigid abdomen, nausea and vomiting, fever and chills, abdominal tenderness or distension, fluid in the abdomen, dehydration, and shock. Treatment options include treating the underlying condition, exploratory surgery where required, antibiotics, and intravenous therapy. In conjunction with conventional medicine, especially antibiotics, homoeopathy, herbal therapies, and nutritional supplements may be used.
