Otitis media is the inflammation of the middle ear caused by an infection that may be bacterial or viral. It is more common in children than in adults as children have a shorter, straighter Eustachian tube. Symptoms of otitis media include difficulty hearing sounds, irritability, fluid draining from the ear, fever, pulling at the ear or complaining of ear pain, trouble sleeping or eating due to pressure changes, dizziness, and ear popping. Treatment options include antibiotics, pain relievers, surgery for chronic cases, keeping water out of the ear, warm compresses, nutritional supplements, herbal remedies, chiropractic, and homoeopathy.
