Nail problems include things such as white spots, pitting, thickening of the nail, separation, vertical splitting, black nail, ridging, hangnails, ingrown nails, and fungal infections. Nail problems may be caused by trauma, infections or skin diseases. They can also be caused by things such as diseases of the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver or thyroid. Treatments for nail problems include medication where appropriate, treating skin diseases, nutritional therapy, and preventative treatments such as wearing gloves when washing dishes.
