Food intolerance is a condition in which the patient reacts to foods in a way that does not impact the immune system and should therefore not be confused with food allergy. Two common intolerances are reactions towards lactose and food additives. Patients with food intolerance may experience symptoms such as nausea, stomach pain, gas, cramps, bloating, vomiting, heartburn, diarrhea, headaches, and irritability. The treatment consists of reducing or avoiding the food that causes the intolerance, for which reason the trigger food must be identified. A food diary may be kept in order to identify the cause of intolerance.
