3 Questions to Ask an Acupuncturist
Acupuncture is an ancient healing modality, backed up by science to treat a range of health conditions and issues. If you’re ready to give acupuncture a try for yourself, you may be wondering what to expect.
With that in mind, we’ve compiled this handy ‘cheat sheet’ with 3 questions to ask an acupuncturist – before you choose a practitioner, and when you’re in the treatment room.
Ask an acupuncturist: Are you qualified and registered?
Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment. But since it involves the careful insertion of tiny needles, it’s important to choose a practitioner who knows what they’re doing. In Australia, acupuncturists need at least a four-year bachelor’s degree to be registered with AHPRA, the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency. It also runs the Chinese Medicine Board, where you can check your practitioner is registered.
If your acupuncturists is registered, they’ll also need to have insurance. Don’t be afraid to check this out before you book.
Ask an acupuncturist: What do you treat?
Many acupuncturists cover all aspects of health and wellness, treating all and any conditions. However, some may specialise in things such as hormones and women’s health, mental health such as anxiety, and muscle or joint pain. If you have a specific health concern, you can ask your acupuncturist if they’re experienced in that area – and what treatment they propose.
Ask an acupuncturist: How many sessions will I need?
This is a question you’ll need to ask in the treatment room, since your acupuncturist won’t be able to tell you over the phone without having had a consultation. In an acupuncture session, they should take your full health history, and current concerns and symptoms, before making a diagnosis. They should then have a better idea of how many sessions you’ll need – although this can vary from person to person.
