Depression and Reflexology

Reflexology has been well documented by science to relieve symptoms of depression. Read on for more information.

What is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a complimentary therapy whose principles are based on the reflexive action of organs, tissues, glands and other body parts. This reflex action is triggered by pressure applied to certain points on the feet and hands that correspond with to other zones in the body. By massaging or applying pressure to these specific points, the reflexologist is enabled to release any blocked energy flow that may be causing any state of disease, such as depression.

What is Depression?

Depression, often referred to as clinical depression, is a mental illness that entails an overwhelming sense of sadness, loss and hopelessness. Bouts of the condition may span from weeks to years, and may sometimes cause the sufferer to despair so greatly they no longer want to live.

How Does Reflexology Benefit Depression?

Reflexology works to relieve symptoms of depression by stimulating specific acupressure points/nerve endings in the feet and hands, which in turn:

  • Causes increased bloodflow to organs;
  • Eliminates toxin build up in the body;
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system;
  • Activates the endocrine system;
  • Induces a state of relaxation, restoring harmony to both the sympathetic and para-sympathetic nervous systems;
  • Encourages a release of the natural feel-good hormones, endorphins, which have been well-documented by science to reduce the body’s stress response;
  • Decongests energy pathways, allowing for optimal nervous system functioning.

A reflexologist may also examine your feet’s colour, condition and appearance in order to potentially identify the root cause of the problem. It may also be used personally and practiced on oneself at home to combat symptoms of Depression.

Reflexology/Acupressure Points for Depression

In order to relieve symptoms of depression, a reflexologist may look to stimulate points that:

  • Correspond to the glands that regulate the release of hormones and neurotransmitters in the body, which when functioning incorrectly may cause symptoms of depression. Some of these glands include the pituitary, pineal, thymus, parathyroid and thyroid glands, whose corresponding points may be found on the ball of the foot, on the inside of the foot, under the big tow and on the big toe.
  • Correspond to the heart, lungs, upper limbs, solar plexus and chest.
  • Generally relieve stress levels and cause a release in the feel-good chemicals endorphins.
