Asparagus Root

Asparagus root is native to Europe, Western Siberia, the Middle East, and Northern Africa.  It is well known and now cultivated in almost every part of the world.  Asparagus root has been referred to as the “Queen of Herbs” for its amazing qualities.  Read on to find out more.

Asparagus Root and Chinese Medicine

Asparagus root is a spirit tonic and a Yin tonic.  It is able to open the heart, prolong life and also tonify both male and female sexual functions.  In Chinese herbalism, it is traditionally used as a major lung tonic.  Asparagus root moistens and purifies the lungs, helping with breathing, removing toxins from the respiratory tract, and improving all respiratory functions.  The skin is considered to be a part of the lung function and asparagus root has great benefits for the skin.  Prolonged consumption sees the skin becoming soft, supple, and smooth, as good skin is the result of pure blood and healthy lungs.  Asparagus root is great for those that have dry skin due to a dry environment or internal dryness.

Asparagus root opens up the heart centre, allowing Shen to flourish.  It manifests as feelings of goodwill, patience, and peace of mind.

Asparagus root also promotes the production of kidney Yin and prolonged use is helpful for sexual weaknesses.  Even though it is best used as a love tonic, asparagus root is often used in tonics that are designed to help with impotence or frigidity on a physical level.  Asparagus root is mildly diuretic and removes heat and pain in the feet, chest, and neck.

Asparagus Root and Ayurvedic Medicine

In Ayurvedic formulations, asparagus root is used to regulate the hormones.  It is best known as an aphrodisiac.  However, other uses include the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers, dyspepsia, and diarrhoea.  Some Ayurvedic practitioners will use asparagus root to help treat nervous disorders, inflammation, liver diseases, and certain infections.

Asparagus Root and Western Medicine

Asparagus root draws fluid out of the body by increasing urination, thus acting as a mild diuretic.  Saponins found in the root are believed to have antibiotic properties.  Asparagus root is recommended to relieve urinary tract inflammation, and to prevent kidney stones.

Research has been carried out on asparagus root and its effects on the kidneys and urinary tract, and the research supports its use.  It has also confirmed that it acts as a mild diuretic.

Other Benefits of Asparagus Root

Asparagus root is believed to enhance feelings of love and compassion when taken regularly.  It contains steroidal glycosides, and this may be why it has a reputation for increasing these positive feelings.  Asparagus root is also a nutritive tonic that relieves some of the symptoms of chronic fatigue syndrome, general exhaustion, and tuberculosis.  It is a nutritive tonic for the lungs.

Asparagus root is also a restorative tonic for the female reproductive system and it can enhance fertility, relieve menstrual cramps, and improve the flow of breast milk.  It can also help to relieve the swelling associated with rheumatism, bloating, and soothing dryness of the throat.

When not to use Asparagus Root

If you have fluid retention due to kidney or heart disease, it is important that you do not take asparagus root in its medicinal strength.  In fact, doing so may actually worsen your condition.
