About Reflexology
Reflexology is a holistic practice based on the principle that certain points on the feet correspond to specific organs, systems and other structures of the body. These points are called ‘reflexes’. Holistic practitioners recognise that the person must be viewed not just as a body demonstrating physical symptoms, but rather as a whole, comprising the body, mind, emotions and spirit.
Holistically, disease (or dis-ease) is believed to be caused by an imbalance in the body’s energy system. These imbalances may stem from one area - or a number of areas - of our lives and could include physical, emotional, environmental or social factors.
Reflexologists can detect these imbalances as they are reflected in the feet, and then use their hands to apply varying types of pressure to these reflexes. This helps the body release tension, eliminate toxins and stimulates the body’s natural healing mechanisms.
For each person, the application and the effect of the therapy delivered by a qualified Reflexologist are unique. Reflexology can be used to restore and maintain the body’s natural equilibrium and encourage healing.
How can Reflexology help you?
Reflexology stimulates blood and lymph circulation, which is necessary to nourish and cleanse the body. It also induces deep relaxation, which is highly beneficial, as it is currently believed that about 75% of illness can be attributed to stress.
Reflexology can be very beneficial for many chronic and acute conditions, including (but not limited to) the following …
- Asthma
- Constipation
- Depression
- Hormonal imbalance
- Infertility
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Migraine
- Pregnancy-related complaints
- PMS
- Sinusitis
- Stress-related conditions
Maternity Reflexology
Reflexology can be helpful for women during pregnancy - and women planning for pregnancy - in a number of ways.
Reflexology can -
- help to balance hormones
- help to ease those aches and pains
- reduce excess fluid and swelling in feet and hands
- help you sleep
- help you reduce stress related and digestive issues
- help to regulate your blood pressure
- support your body during the time before conception.
The beneficial relaxing, rebalancing impact of reflexology is increasingly becoming part of maintaining a healthy pregnancy, and pre-conception.
The use of reflexology in a maternity context is not new, nor just as an integrated therapy used in relation to pain relief. Research (a study at the Gentofte Hospital in Copenhagen, reported 1988) demonstrated that reflexology can offer substantial pain relief for women during labour. Other studies (eg Dr Gowri Motha, 1992-93) document evidence pointing to shorter labours and easier births.
