Guiding You Toward Wholeness: Compassionate Counselling, Transformative Therapy, and Spiritual Direction
SERVICES
What I offer
At different stages and transitions throughout my life, I have been privileged to experience the deep gift of another person’s presence and companionship supporting me in my journey to greater wholeness and participation in the world. These experiences in one-on-one therapy, group therapy and spiritual direction opened new ways of living and relating have been transformative for me. I believe each of us has infinite worth, unique creative abilities and spontaneous capacities to meet our life’s purpose. My approach to companioning you will be to develop a partnership with you. By allowing a container of mutual trust and respect to develop over time you may notice your emerging capacity for expressions of vitality and healing.
Who I am
I have been involved with, and trained in psychodrama for twenty years and I am presently working towards becoming certified as a psychodramatist and psychotherapist. Throughout these same years, my life direction has been as a catholic priest, in which I am also a qualified spiritual director in the Ignatian method. Within these differing pastoral, spiritual and therapeutic roles I have come to a deep appreciation of just how unique each of us is in the ways we experience and make sense of our world. I believe in a context of listening to our deepest desires for wholeness we can discover our unique life purpose seeking expression through us.
Counselling
Counselling is a process where people share, explore, and resolve difficult issues people may be facing in their lives, supported by the knowledge, skilfulness, and presence of a trained person. It is, above all, the client’s preferences, desires, and needs that determine the approach a counsellor will take with each person. Counselling assumes that the quality of our relationships (in the past as much as the present) deeply affect our well-being. A supportive therapeutic relationship helps us gain insight and resources to move towards the desired outcomes for our lives and relationships.
Spiritual Direction
Sharing many features to counselling, forms of spiritual direction have been a vital part of most faith traditions throughout the centuries. While Christianity has a specific perspective, spiritual direction more generally involves helping people grow in their relationship to the sacred as they experience it. By inviting people to notice how this sacred presence is constantly at work in their day-to-day lives, a spiritual director helps people discern these sacred invitations and respond to them more fully.
Ignatian Spiritual Direction
Working from a Christian perspective, Ignatian spiritual direction is structured to the individual needs of the person as they emerge in the context of their daily lives. A spiritual director assists people to reflect on the day-to-day movements of their heart in the context of God’s love for them. By developing a deeper understanding of where these movements come from and where they lead, people are led to discern how, and where, God is calling them in their lives and move towards this.
