About Us What we Do We help people who struggle with pain, health problems and stress to achieve optimum health and wellbeing. Yoga empowers people to take charge of their own health and learn tools they can implement themselves. Craniosacral Therapy enables people to resolve past trauma and restore good health. And massage feels good! Our Goals Our first goal as your therapist or yoga teacher, is to listen to what your needs are and what you would like to get out of your time with us. Our second goal is to have you walk out the door with your needs met!!! Our key goal that we carry through all our work, is to connect people to health in their body and strengthen their relationship to health. We also like to role model having a strong relationship with our own health.
Craniosacral Therapy What can it help me with? Because this therapy works directly with the nervous system and encompasses the entire body, the possible benefits from this therapy are endless. Some of the more common complaints I see come through my door are – persistent and/or recurring pain, digestive complaints, anxiety / nervous system overwhelm, emotional / hormonal imbalance, adrenal fatigue and respiratory problems. How does it work? Craniosacral Therapy works on a physical level in a similar way to how counselling works on a mental / emotional level. The therapist has a highly attuned sense of perception through their touch, which they have developed through hundreds of hours of practice. This can be likened to how a blind person can read brail clearly with their fingers, whereas a person who can still see finds it difficult to feel the raised bumps. Through this highly attuned sense, the therapist can feel patterns being expressed through the client’s connective tissue in a full body context. The client’s nervous system can sense on a subconscious level that the therapist can feel this pattern, and this feedsback to the client’s system that this is a pattern that is not part of their original health and can be re-organised. This all happens through the frontal lobes of the brain in some specialised neurons called mirror neurons.
Yoga Why do yoga? Yoga has been practiced for over 1000 years, originating in India, and formed the foundation for an ever expanding practice now found globally. Originally, yoga was practiced as a pathway to Self Realization, to understand the workings of our ego, spiritual, emotional, mental and physical bodies and find balance and alignment between these different aspects of ourselves. The word Asana is the term used to describe the set of postures practiced in yoga, and this word translates to mean “comfortable seat”. What we are offering is a return to the origins of yoga, where we truly listen to our body and provide it will the support it needs to function at it’s best. In these classes we explore ways in which we can move with greater ease and comfort, through a greater awareness of our breath, our whole body and the alignment of our mind, body and spirit. We cannot have perfect alignment in our body, without involving the mind and spirit. Try standing with your shoulders slumped and feel happy. Now try standing up nice and tall and try to feel sad. It is very difficult isn’t it?! As B.K.S Iyengar said – “the posture of the body, reflects the posture of the mind“. And he was right. Through balancing the ecology of these fundamental aspects of ourselves, we can find peace within our mind (mental health), body (physical health) and spirit (emotional health).
Massage Why get a Massage? Life happens. We sit at computers and get sore. We play sports and get sore. We lift up kids and get sore. We feel stressed and get sore. The whole body plays a part in patterns which contribute to pain, and one of the key parts of our anatomy which is facilitated in pain, is our fascia. Fascia envelopes almost every facet of our anatomy from muscle cells, to tendons, to organs. Its function is to separate and contain different parts of our anatomy, and to allow the different parts to glide past eachother in a smooth and fluid like fashion. What happens sometimes if we injure ourselves, become dehydrated, become sedentary or get into some bad postural habits, is this fascia can get sticky and stop gliding freely in a fluid like manner. This means movement becomes restricted, blood flow to the area becomes restricted, and other parts of the body start to compensate for this lack of free movement. There we have the beginings of a pain syndrome. There are many different ways of breaking down these adhesions and creating more fluidity in the fascia again. Massage is potentially the most widely known and sought after method used by people in search of a release. How Does Massage Work? In order to break up the fascial adhesions, we need to change the state of the fascia from a solid form to a gel like form. We call this process thixotropism, which can be likened to liquifaction. In an earthquake, wherever there is a high saturation of water in the earth, the fluid rises to the surface creating changes in the soil structure and any structures on the land. Massage works in a similar way, by warming up the tissues, they become more pliable and easy to manipulate. The fascial adhesions become more pliable and we can slowly work our way deeper to break up the “fuzz” or the adhesions until we get a sense of movement, fluidity and blood flow in the muscle again. Once we have achieved this, we then gently stretch the fascia and put it back where it wants to be.
