About Ali Scott
I believe learning changing and moving forward in life can be a creative and enjoyable process and I am delighted to be able to work with people, teaching them the 'how' of change. At the heart of both my professional and personal life has always been communication and ideas, plus a very real pleasure in life and nature.
My love of creatures led to a BSc. in Zoology. A passion for people and need to be practically active led me to work with Youthline and other community organizations where I trained and worked as a Counsellor. Although rewarding, this work didn't satisfy my need for systemic change and so I began looking for creative solutions and began an artistic career, gaining a Diploma in Film Making, script-writing for TVNZ and copy for RNZ.
I also travelled and lived in Europe. In London, I worked as a script-writer and developed my own work, including short stories and poetry (watch this space). Whilst living in Germany I worked as an English Language teacher.
Discovering the field of NLP and training as a Master Practitioner and Coach, brought it all together. This involved loving life, caring about others, finding practical solutions, understanding how words create vision and appreciating the structure of real and imaginary drama, plus the nuances of language and learning how people learn.
NLP has transformed the way I see human growth and potential and, in my view, is evidence that human development is a constructive and creative process.
Working professionally with these skills was the logical next step, so I have set up in private practice in Christchurch.
I am active in professional development including regular professional supervision and ongoing training with both national and international trainers. I am also a passionate writer who loves 'spreading the word' about the incredible benefits of NLP.
Special areas of expertise include:
- Weight and Food Issue
- Parenting Challenges
- Grief
- Disability
- Trauma & Phobia
- Stress & Anxiety
- Addiction
- Depression
- Relationship Difficulties
When not practising NLP or parenting, I'm either doing Chigong (a traditional health practise to cultivate Chi), out walking, enjoying friends and family, writing or singing in the kitchen.
What is NLP?
N = neuro/the human nervous system including the brain and senses.
L = linguistic/language.
P = programming.
According to NLP the human nervous system has its own natural language system that codes and organises the content of our thoughts and actions. This natural language system is sensory and it is this sensory information that automatically lets us know what to think, do and feel.
For example it is the sound of the voice that you talk to yourself with, the tone, pitch, speed and intonation of this self-talk voice that lets you know how to feel, rather than the content. Try criticising yourself in a Donald Duck voice. It feels surprisingly good.
How can it help me?
Often times we do our very best to drop old habits and try a new way - with no success. It almost seems to be beyond our control, as if we were on auto pilot ... and there are other times when changing is as easy as 1,2,3 ... The thing is that 90 % of the things we do, we do automatically, eating, walking, talking and so on. Initially, when learning, we do it consciously (remember learning to ride a bike). When we become good at it we switch to autopilot and then off we go, our conscious minds freed up to learn our next new trick.
Meanwhile, back in the brain, these newly learnt behaviors are stored and organized so that they can keep happening automatically. And sometimes some of the things we learn pass their use by date - riding your bike? No.
Cuddling your teddy? Yes.
NLP therapy could be viewed as cleaning out old brain software, or simply weeding - compost the weeds because everything is of value. And then, most importantly the old is replaced with the new, which will get you what you need. Because getting you what you need is at the heart of NLP. Everything we do, even when it doesn't work, is an attempt to get ourselves what we truly need.
How does it work?
The way each of us 'do' our thinking processes is as unique and individual as the way that we walk or talk. For example two people walk into a party of strangers and have 2 very different experiences; one may ask themselves, "What interesting people will I meet tonight?" and as their mind explores this question and possible answers the person feels excited as their body fills with 'happy' chemicals endorphins.
The other person may ask themselves, "Will they like me?" and as their mind explores this question and possible answers they begin to feel anxious as their body fills with 'fear' chemicals adrenalin. As most of our thinking is unconscious we are not usually aware of the thoughts causing the discomfort and it is usually just the resulting feelings that we notice. So the challenge has always been how do we change something that we are not aware of.
NLP has uncovered what appears to be the brain's natural language system so we are now able to 'speak' directly to the brain. Using this natural language system it is possible to identify and change the unconscious thoughts and actions that are not helping, and to design and create new thoughts and actions and even beliefs that are in alignment with what it is that we really truly need. NLP is a powerful tool with which you can have huge influence.

The Habits of Happiness TM
Being happy may not be everyone's goal - but it is certainly everyone's preferred side effect.
And the good news is that it is learnable.
Research from the field of positive psychology is now showing that Happiness, and its extended family, for example, Joy, Calm, Pride, Hope and Love, are characterised by a certain way of thinking and being, and that we can successfully learn and apply these to our lives.
Conversely, the thinking style 'symptomatic' of unhappiness can also be unlearnt.
Here's an example of a thinking style where changing just one word in a sentence can create a wonderful change in you.
When a negative event happens in the life of a pessimistic thinker they'll make a generalisation when explaining the negative event to themselves. They'll use words like often or always. 'The boss said he thinks my work today was below par . . . . I'm always slipping up'.
When a negative event happens in the life of an optimistic thinker they will be specific and keep it small when explaining it to themselves. They'll use words like today, just now or sometimes. 'The boss said he thinks my work today was below par. I'm tired today.'
When you generalise with negative events you will feel even worse. When you get specific you?ll feel a little bit better. Just practising being specific about the causes or meaning of a negative event will over time make you feel a whole lot better.
This is just one of the many tools. Plus there are stories and beliefs and interactive exercises (lots of laughter) and a wealth of learning.
Come along to 'The Habits of Happiness' TM and learn the emotional and mental skills conducive to leading a happy life.
The goal is a life that is easier, more enjoyable and much more effective - the side effect is happiness.

High carb, high fat, high sugar foods (like pasta, pizza, crisps, chocolate, cakes, and biscuits, are the 'goto' foods for emotional hunger. Blood sugar spikes – and you get a rush of dopamine. But the side effects are taking their toll . . . .
Learn The Satisfy System

- eat like the naturally slender
- satisfy mind AND body
- use Craving Buster techniques
