WHAT ISSUES CAN A COUNSELLOR HELP ME WITH?
Counsellors typically support clients with a number of issues, including relationship stress, marital conflict, difficulty with dating, infidelity, trust issues, commitment issues, dissatisfaction in the bedroom, money stress, dealing with break-ups, separation and divorce, and many others. Counsellors also help with non-specific concerns like self-esteem, managing periods of depression, periodic and ongoing anxiety concerns as well as a host of diagnosable issues. Counsellors can specialize in areas like alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders and career counselling.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM WORKING WITH A COUNSELLOR?
A counsellor functions as non-judgmental voice to help clients deal with and resolve emotional concerns. They provide a safe place where clients can talk about any and all problems on their mind.
Counsellors are trained to listen in an objective manner and offer helpful feedback, insight and clarification.
In session, we operate in the role of a guide. Clients should expect a counsellor to ask questions and encourage them to talk so they can delve more deeply into their issue. Counsellors usually do not talk as much as the client because only the client knows where the pain and resistance lie, and the client is ultimately the one who will do the work to resolve the issue.
If you are seeking help, keep in mind that counsellors will not solve your problems for you. Their role is to help facilitate awareness. Insights that you make with the help of a counsellor help you make changes, choices and find a resolution for the concerns in your life. Working a with counsellor can help just about anyone develop a better understanding of what they want from life. This work can also help increase harmony in all relationships—including your relationship with yourself.
We understand that no two people are alike. No two people understand the same language in the same way; their understanding will always be linked to their personal experience of the world.
Our role as a counsellor is to enable you to explore many aspects of your life and feelings, by talking openly and freely.
Talking in such a way it is rarely possible with family or friends, who are likely to be emotionally involved and have opinions and biases that may be detrimental to the success of the counselling. We don't judge nor offer advice. W gives you an opportunity to express difficult feelings such as anger, resentment, guilt and fear in a confidential environment.
Effective counselling reduces confusion, allowing the client to make effective decisions leading to positive changes in their attitude and/or behaviour. Effective counselling is not advice-giving and is not acting on someone else's behalf (these are more the roles of a life coach). The ultimate aim of counselling is to enable the client to make their own choices, reach their own decisions and to act upon them accordingly.
