Aromatherapy for women
profile
I have a Celtic soul. I was born in Dublin, spent my childhood summers in the West of Ireland and attended University College Dublin. I taught Languages for 8 years in the U.K. Nassau, Epsom Girls Grammar and King’s Prep Auckland and ran my own award winning Boutique Bakery, Ballyglass House, for 10 years. The products were Irish Speciality breads and Irish Plum Puddings, for clients such as Air New Zealand first class. I won two major food awards including the Massey University Enterprise Award.
In between I raised 7 children. Several years ago I was diagnosed as being a coeliac. That was the end of breadmaking. A trip to the Abbaye de Senanque in Provence, and the sight and smell of the lavender fields and products made by the monks, triggered something in my soul.
I returned to Auckland to study Aromatherapy. I have been interested in complementary therapies since my children were small and more so during 10 years of declining health before the coeliac diagnosis.
I have a great love and passion for Nature, flowers, herbs and the natural medicines with which they supply us. Studying Aromatherapy has been a highlight in my life and I have become completely fascinated by this modality as I see the changes it can evoke physically, mentally and emotionally It is a modality for which life experience on the part of the practitioner is a great asset because listening with a compassionate, understanding, intuitive heart is an integral part of the treatment.
testimonials
-‘After the loss of my husband who was the light of my life, I virtually crumbled into darkness. Having Aromatherapy treatments with Annie and looking at grief helped me heal. By the 3rd treatment I felt I was starting to come back to being me, able to talk to people, grieve openly and face life again.”
- Cheryl.
- Annie, thank you for your wonderful treatments, and your enormous ability to listen compassionately, without judgment. You have a real talent for knowing what oils to use, and knew just how to treat my particular situation. Through these wonderful Aromatherapy Massages, I have learnt about the healing properties of the oils, and also about a heightened self- awareness, and my own ability to restore a natural balance within myself I also particularly enjoyed your attention to detail in the treatment room with the flowers, china vases, candles and sprigs of lavender-it was very nurturing. By the end of the series of massages I felt uplifted and invigorated and ready to ‘take on the world’ thank you”

why aromatherapy
Fear and anxiety are the diseases of our age.
Extracts from “Molecules of Emotion, the Science behind Mind-Body Medicine,” Candace Pert- Feeling low and sluggish? Take a walk.
- Feeling anxious and jittery? Run.
- Feeling worthless? Get a massage. Your mind, your feelings are in your body, and it’s there in your somatic experience that feeling is healed.
“The emotions exist in the body as information chemicals, the neuropeptides and receptors, and they also exist in another realm, the one we experience as feeling, inspiration, love, beyond the physical. The emotions move back and forth, flowing freely between both places and in that sense they connect the physical and non physical. The way health occurs in the body has to do with the flow of the biochemicals of emotion. My work has taught me there is a physical reality to the emotions. The molecules of emotion run every system of the body”.

As long ago as the 5th century B.C. Hippocrates said “a perfumed bath and a scented massage everyday is the way to good health” The link between the sense of smell and the emotions is profound. The olfactory system connects directly to the limbic system in the brain, the seat of our moods, emotions and memories.
Aromatherapy is a branch of herbal medicine involving the controlled use of Essential Oils or Aromatic Plant Essences to help promote and maintain physical, psychological and spiritual wellbeing.
essential oils
Essential Oils are highly aromatic volatile substances occurring naturally in certain plants. They are stored in many parts; flowers, leaves, stems, seeds, berries, fruits, resin, wood, roots. They are made up of lOOs of molecules from different chemical groups which form unique combinations giving each Essential Oil its characteristic aroma and therapeutic properties.
They are absorbed either through inhalation or through the skin and can activate the hypothalamus which affects the endocrine system. They can trigger memories and emotions and work within the respiratory system to enter the bloodstream. They are 70% more potent than the plant itself and a huge amount of plant material is required to extract a tiny amount of oil [approx 1000kgs of rose petals yields 500gms of pure rose Oil]
massage
Massage is regarded as one of the truly preventative holistic therapies because it promotes the flow of blood and lymph, improves nervous conductivity, soothes tension, increases vital energy and promotes a sense of emotional wellbeing. By inducing a state of relaxation it eases muscle tension which often relates not only to physical pain but psychological tension and repressed emotions.
Aromatherapy massage combines the physiological benefits of massage with the therapeutic holistic effects of the plant essences.
