The Alexander Technique
Back pain is one of the most widespread health problems in modern society. According to ACC, 80% of New Zealanders suffer from low back pain at some time in their lives.
What is the Alexander Technique?
The Alexander Technique is a potentially life changing experience that brings more poise and confidence, enhanced freedom in movement and more ease in everything we do. The technique is a simple and practical method for improving poise, vitality and co-ordination.
The Alexander Technique can benefit almost anyone - young or old, strong or frail, those in discomfort and pain, and those wishing to maintain good health or perform at their best.
The technique teaches clients how to move and function with less effort and more ease. You will become more aware of yourself and your body on a moment by moment basis and how to sit, stand, walk and move more efficiently and according to the design of your body. You will learn to move in a way that places least effort and strain on your body and which helps alleviate physical discomfort.
After the class, you will feel lighter, clearer, more focussed, and have more energy. You will receive tools on how to continue to move and feel at your best, alleviate pain, stress, reduce performance anxiety and improve your overall functioning and wellbeing.
Recent Research
Professor Paul Little, primary care specialist says: "Massage is helpful in the short term, but the Alexander Technique retained effectiveness at one year.
It probably does this by limiting muscle spasm, strengthening postural muscles, improving co-ordination and flexibility and decompressing the spine.
The results should apply to most patients with chronic or recurrent back pain."
