Welcome to Buteyko Breathing Clinics
What is Buteyko?
The Buteyko breathing method is a strategy to retrain dysfunctional breathing based on the postulation that many diseases result from an abnormal breathing pattern. To be more specific, conditions such as asthma, high blood pressure, sleep apnoea, panic disorders, hypertension, etc. are believed to be the body's responses (a 'defence mechanism') to 'hyperventilation' or in simple terms; over-breathing.
Professor Konstantin Buteyko, a Russian physician, developed the method in the 1940s to alleviate such conditions. He found that hyperventilation is the primary cause of these conditions and thus his programme is based on slowing down breathing rates to within normal parameters. The programme includes guidelines for correct diaphragmatic breathing and learning to breathe through the nose.
Buteyko theory is based on the understanding that over-breathing disturbs the balance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in our lungs. An asthma attack is the body’s way of attempting to reduce the airflow passing through the lungs in order to reduce carbon dioxide loss.
According to Professor Buteyko, 200 different chronic diseases are essentially just one, which he called “deep breathing disease”. When breathing is normalised which can be done simply by decreasing its depth thus allowing carbon dioxide in alveolar air to reach the desired level of 6.5%, symptoms can disappear.
Though most people may think of it as a poison, carbon dioxide may, in fact, be the “breath of life”.
We offer individualy tailored programmes of breathing exercises and life style guidelines which correct and alleviate breathing-related conditions including:
The programme includes individualised breathing exercises, lifestyle and dietary guidelines to achieve optimal health by helping restore a natural breathing pattern. Most of our clients experience a significant reduction in symptoms within the first few days of the programme. The exercises are practised daily for six weeks to achieve optimal results. The programme can be learned by children and adults in groups or in private sessions.

Having heard remarkable reports from my patients who did the Buteyko course, my son and I tried it out. I learned how to eliminate a migraine headache and my son's asthma, made worse by cold and exercise was noticeably better just by doing the exercises.
At the six weeks follow-up everyone had made progress, e.g. from asthma, fatigue from sleep problems, snoring, sleep apnoea, anxiety, panic attacks and improvement in athletic performance. And there was a sense of confidence that the exercises could continue to provide relief of symptoms. I noticed my sleep quality was better too.
I feel confident in recommending this course to my patients who have asthma, sleep problems, anxiety and panic attacks and sleep apnoea.
I believe every health professional should experience the course for themselves. The theory in itself is well worth hearing as it makes sense and its practical application is the evidence of its efficacy. It's quite possible that Buteyko breathing could have much wider health applications.
