Mount Pleasant Pilates - situated on the tranquil lower slopes of Mount Pleasant in Christchurch - opened June 2006. The newly constructed studio is fully equipped with professional Pilates apparatus - a Cadillac, Reformer, Ladder Barrel, and Wunda Chairs, The workout space is airy, light-filled, and enjoys views of the Estuary and Ocean. If (after your workout) you are off to work, shopping, or play an ensuite shower is available for your use. The Pilates Method — originated by Joe Pilates over 85 years ago — is an internationally acclaimed conditioning and rehabilitative regimen suitable for bodies of all types and ages. From the most physical fit (athletes and dancers) to clients with chronic or acute limitation (back, shoulder or hip pain, arthritis) benefit from the Pilates method. Pilates aligns and reshapes the body. It builds core strength, increases flexibility, improves posture, coordination, and promotes a focused mind. All of these features create an anti-aging and conditioning system. Pilates offers a time-proven way to a sleeker, fitter, more vibrant you. The Pilates Method is respected by Orthopaedic Surgeons, Physiotherapists, Osteopaths, Chiropractors and Sports Medicine Specialists - all of whom refer patients to Pilates practitioners. Pilates effectively addresses post-operative needs, muscular imbalances, restores ease in daily activities, prevents injury and enhances sports and fitness performance. I relocated from the U.S. to Christchurch, in January 2005. Prior to our move I owned two well-regarded Pilates Studios in Massachusetts. Momentum Pilates (successfully operating under new ownership) was staffed by certified professionals and licensed by the Pilates Method Alliance to train and certify Pilates instructors. My Pilates apprenticeship began in New York City, with Romana Kryzanowska — a close protégé of Joseph Pilates — with over six decades of Pilates teaching and teacher training to her credit. I undertook a 600-hour internship at internationally known Tribeca Bodyworks and Dr. Howard Sichel’s respected Power Pilates Studios — two New York Pilates centers which strive to preserve the time-proven original version of the Pilates Method. I am fortunate to have studied with four of the six remaining Pilates Elders, a group of master teachers trained by Joseph Pilates—originator of the Pilates Method. My professional training has included work with Elder Practitioners Romana Kryzanowska, Ron Fletcher, and Kathy Grant. Shortly before opening my own studios I studied with, and taught for, revered Elder Practitioner Mary Bowen — at Bowen’s longstanding Northampton Massachusetts Pilates studio. I am pleased to be able to offer New Zealanders the original Pilates Method. Clients who work with a practitioner, properly grounded in historically sound Pilates technique, will more fully and rapidly benefit from the dramatically effective toning, strengthening and physical rehabilitation Pilates is famous for.
